St Edward’s is an Operation Encompass school and works in close partnership with Staffordshire Police as part of our ongoing commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children.
What is Operation Encompass?
Operation Encompass is a national safeguarding initiative that supports children who may have been affected by domestic abuse. The project enables schools to be informed, in confidence, when a child has experienced a domestic abuse incident the previous evening, night, or weekend.
This information is shared directly by the police with a trained member of the school safeguarding team, known as the Key Adult, before the start of the next school day.
How does Operation Encompass support children?
The purpose of Operation Encompass is to ensure that schools are aware of situations that may impact a child’s emotional wellbeing, behaviour or ability to learn. By receiving this information promptly, school staff can:
- Offer sensitive, appropriate support to the child
- Help the child feel safe and secure in school
- Monitor wellbeing and provide reassurance as needed
- Work closely with other safeguarding professionals where appropriate
No details of the incident are shared beyond what is necessary to protect and support the child.
Our commitment at St Edward’s
At St Edward’s, safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Our staff are trained to respond calmly, sensitively and professionally to any information shared through Operation Encompass. All information is treated with the strictest confidentiality and handled in line with safeguarding and data protection requirements.
Operation Encompass does not replace, or remove, the responsibility of families to engage with other support services where appropriate, but it does ensure that children receive understanding and care during the school day when they may need it most.
