‘The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you’ll go’ (Dr Seuss)
INTENT
English is essential for communication both in school and in the wider world, and it underpins learning across all subjects. At St. Edward’s, our English curriculum reflects the inclusive nature of our Academy by helping pupils understand different perspectives and appreciate a world beyond their own—an important skill for English and for life.

We ensure pupils develop confidence in speaking by taking part in discussions, presentations, performances, role play, improvisation and debates. They are encouraged to express ideas clearly and justify their answers, arguments and opinions.
We aim to foster a genuine love of reading. Pupils engage with a wide range of challenging fiction and non-fiction, including texts that reflect their own culture as well as diverse global voices. Through critical reading, they learn to compare texts and analyse how writers use language.
We also support pupils in writing accurately, fluently and for a range of purposes and audiences. They learn to apply their growing understanding of vocabulary, grammar and text structure, choosing the most effective form to suit the task.
CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
Pupils in Key Stage 2 follow the National Curriculum, which includes reading, writing, grammar, punctuation and spelling.
In Year 5, pupils build on the knowledge and skills gained in Years 3 and 4 through a range of themed units (see English Learning Journeys). Assessment in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and spoken language takes place throughout the year.
Weekly home learning is set and may include written tasks, research or other activities. Pupils are also expected to read daily and learn weekly spellings.
At Key Stage 3, we continue to follow the National Curriculum. Pupils further develop their reading and writing skills, exploring literature from different times, places and cultures and writing for a variety of audiences and purposes. Assessment in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and spoken language continues throughout the year.
